Chandigarh, Feb 18: Punjab Police has registered a case against champion athlete Milkha Singh for getting involved in a brawl at the Chandigarh Golf Club on Feb 16. Ironically, Milkha used to scorch the track in his heyday but he is now more famous as the father of international golfer Jeev Milkha Singh.

Though the 'Flying Sikh' has denied any wrongdoing on his part, a retired Army officer who filed an FIR after the brawl avers that Milkha and Congress MLA Randeep Singh Nabha thrashed him. According to Lieutenant Colonel Vijay Singh Sandhu, the legendary athlete also issued threats.

Milkha Singh's version of events is quite different. He said that the MLA was playing with him along with Punjab's ex-chief secretary RS Mann and a former golf course official SS Laihal. Sandhu was meanwhile part of another three-member group.

"Colonel Sandhu had asked Randeep for a pass to move ahead when the four of us were playing. Randeep and I told him that let us complete and then he may move ahead. He removed our tee, placed his and took a shot," Milkha Singh recounted.

"Randeep then placed back his tee and told the Colonel to get aside as he may get hurt. However, Sandhu pushed him, hit him with a golf club and told him that take a shot and I will see. This resulted in a scuffle," he said.

"It is an unfortunate incident. Both Mann and I tried to intervene and calm the things down. However, Sandhu acted in an unprovoked manner, unbecoming of someone from an Army background. His allegations against me are totally baseless. He tarnished a gentleman's game like golf," the 'Flying Sikh' added.

Only an investigation will reveal whoever was at fault but the brawl left Sandhu and Nabha with serious injuries. The duo was rushed to hospital. Later, the Sector 26 police ensured that both were subjected to a detailed medical examination. The two of them not surprisingly named each other in their FIRs.

Incidentally, a Bollywood film on Milkha's achievements is due to hit the screens later this year. 'Bhaag Milkha Bhaag' with Farhan Akhtar in the lead role is slated for a spectacular release on Jul 12.
