Kolkata, Feb 12: One policeman was killed in a clash that broke out at Harimohan Ghosh College at Garden Reach area here on Tuesday morning during issuing of nomination papers in the upcoming college election. Scuffle broke out during the filing of nomination papers in the upcoming college election between the supporters of Chhatra Parishad (CP) and Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (TMCP), the students' unions of the Congress and the Trinamool Congress (TMC), respectively.

The victim was hit by a bullet during the firing that started during the clash and he later succumbed to his injuries in a hospital. He was identified as Tapash Chowdhury, a sub-inspector of the special branch.

On Monday night, three persons including the son of the local TMC councillor were injured in a bomb blast at a house in the same area. It was alleged that the blast occurred while the three were preparing crude bombs, perhaps to be used during the elections. On Tuesday morning, police personnel were deployed in the area apprehending violence. Firing started in the heated-up situation and Chowdhury was seen lying in a serious condition.

Senior CPI(M) leader Mohammad Salim accused West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of mishandling the situation and alleged that she had made it free for all in the state. State urban development minister Firhad Hakim said it was a conspiracy of the Congress and the CPI(M) and accused hands of local goons behind the incident.

A few days ago, Union minister Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury was seen leading a mob that ransacked a government official's office in Berhampore in Murshidabad district. He even remained defiant saying nothing had happened and he would not apologise to anybody.

If this is how the leaders act, why blame the followers?
