Meghalaya assembly poll: 351 nomination papers found valid

Meghalaya
Shillong, Feb 8: The Election Commission on Feb 7 found valid the nomination papers of 351 aspirants for the February 23 assembly elections in Meghalaya and rejected the papers of four.

Nomination papers of one candidate each of the ruling Congress and its ally, the HSPDP, and two of the nominees of the United Democratic Party (UDP) were rejected, Chief Election officer P Naik told PTI.

The last date of withdrawal of nomination papers is Saturday. Meanwhile, door-to-door campaigning for votes is going on in full swing besides public meetings at night and rallies during the day across the state.

Flying squads and video surveillance teams were dispatched by district administrators, who are also district election officers, in a bid to check use of money, liquor and other items to influence voters.

Twenty general observers of the EC were stationed in all district headquarters and four sub-divisions apart from 13 financial observers and 11 police observers in the state.
