Delhi victim's ashes
New Delhi, Feb 2: Is Congress President Sonia Gandhi going to play a crucial role in giving justice to the 23-year-old victim of Delhi gang-rape who is known as "Amanat"? Ahead of filing chargesheet against five accused of the case, the victim's family members sought help from Mrs Gandhi.

While the family members seem upset with Juvenile Justice Board's rule of declaring the sixth accused as "minor", they also look forward to fast track court hearing. The five accused are likely to be charge-sheeted on Saturday, Feb 2.

According to sources, charge-sheets are likely to be filed under 13 sections of the IPC including murder, gang-rape, robbery and conspiracy. The five accused are currently in jail and are expected to get severe punishments such as death penalty or life imprisonment.

Meanwhile, Amanat's father had sought an appointment with the Congress President. Her office has asked them to wait for some time as she is busy with prior commitments, he said.

Amanat's family is unhappy over the Juvenile Justice Board's decision that the sixth accused in the case is a minor. However, Amanat's father says he has full faith that despite him being ruled as a juvenile, he would also get sternest of punishments.

Amanat's father said he was seeking advice of legal experts on the decision of the Juvenile Justice Board but was yet to decide whether to go to court to challenge the verdict. The Juvenile Justice Board had said the sixth accused, described as the most brutal by the Delhi Police in its charge sheet, was a "minor" and this could enable him to walk free by June 4 this year when he attains the age of 18 years.

Amanat's brother said just as the central and Delhi governments initiated steps on rape cases following mass protests and agitations, there should also be efforts for awarding capital punishment for minor offenders in rape cases.
