Lucknow, Jan 1: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav on Monday announced a financial relief of Rs 20 lakh for the family of the Delhi gangrape victim who died in a Singapore hospital on December 29. The compensation will be provided from the CM's discretionary fund.

On December 21, Yadav had announced to provide Rs five lakh to the family of the victim who was brutally reaped and assaulted in a moving private bus in southern Delhi on the night of December 16. He also offered state government's help to bear the medical expenses of the 23-year-old woman while she was undergoing treatment and also a job after recovery.

The woman's family had moved from Balla district of the state to Delhi two decades ago but still maintained a close connection with its native place. The woman was studying physiotherapy while two of her brothers are still studying.

The UP CM's announcement overlooked the criticism of Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati and Shahi Imam of Delhi's Jama Masjid Imam Bukhari. The BSP chief said the state government needed to focus more on prevention of rape and ensure speedy justice. She slammed the Samajwadi Party government in the state saying the latter failed to curb crime against women since it came to power earlier last year. Bukhari, on the other hand, said the state government should also provide compensation to Muslim rape victims.

Earlier on Monday, the Delhi government today announced financial aid of Rs 15 lakh for the next of the kin of the 23-year-old gangrape victim and offered a job to a family member of the girl, who died two days ago.

The decisions were taken at a cabinet meeting presided over by chief minister Sheila Dikshit.

"Keeping in view the extremely exceptional circumstances and barbaric nature of the crime, the cabinet decided to sanction an amount of Rs 15 lakh to the surviving members of the victim," said Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit in a statement.

The victim's mortal remains were cremated here on Sunday.

BJP demands removal of rape-accused MoS

The BJP on Monday sought the removal of minister of state for civil defence Manoj Paras, accused in a rape case. State BJP president Laxmikant Bajpai said two other SP MLAs, namely, Anoop Sanda and Bhagwan Sharma 'Guddu', were also accused of rape charges and demanded their resignation.
