Police tried to disperse crowd gathered outside Rashtrapati Bhavan on Saturday, Dec 22 with tear gas, water cannon and lathicharge. But their efforts went in vain as protesters breached the security and went berserk demanding justice for the victim. The girl was gangraped by six men in a moving bus and later along with her male friend was stripped and thrown out of the bus.
This is the first time in Indian history a non-political social issue enraged countrymen in such a way that they reached Rashtrapati Bhavan at Raisina Hill which is a high security zone as it houses India's most important government buildings.
Throngs of Delhiites flooded the streets in protest, demanding answers from President Pranab Mukherjee and administration. The wave of protest has also touched other cities of the country. People joined candle light march in cities such as Bangalore, Kolkata, Mumbai, Guwahati and many others. See the pictures here.
