Rape victim is a brave girl, continues to be stable: Doctors

, Dec 20: The 23-year-old gangrape victim continues to be stable, said a senior medical official of Safdarjung

in New Delhi on Thursday morning.

The 23-year-old paramedical student, who was gang-raped and tortured in a moving bus on Sunday night, on Wednesday underwent fifth surgery. Doctors at the Safdarjung hospital performed an elective abdominal surgery - gastronomy and duodenostomy - and surgeons had to remove her gangrenous small intestine.

They said she has lost most of her intestine. "This was a planned surgery and at this juncture she is responding to treatment fairly well, she is stable but she continues to be critical," Dr BD Athani, Medical Superintendent of the hospital, said on Wednesday.

In an emotional letter addressed to her mother, the victim expressed her desire to live. According to television reports the girl has said, "Maa, main jeena chahti hoon" (Mother, I want to live).

Many have demanded capital punishment for the criminals, who brutally raped, beat and threw the victim out of a moving bus (the crime scene) on the roads to die. According to TV reports, vital organs of the girl are permanently damaged. She is on a ventilator in the hospital's ICU and is getting a regular infusion of morphine to control the pain. Doctors treating her claim that the pain is so excruciating that despite the morphine dose she is conscious.
