Mr Mahadevan committed suicide after jumping into the Adyar river from the Kotturpuram bridge. Police officials, who were the eyewitnesses, said, "He apparently asked the driver to stop his Honda City car and stepped out, talking on his mobile phone around 1 pm."

"People who saw him jump off the bridge into the river called the fire and rescue service," added the cops. He was declared brought dead when he was taken to a hospital.

Nithyasree, who was supposed to perform at Rama Rao Kalyana Mantap as part of annual margazhi festival in the city, broke down at the news. Reason behind Mr Mahadevan's shocking move has not been known yet.
