Rape Horror: Victim wants to live, rapist wants to be hanged

, Dec 19: The brutal gangrape of a 23-year-old girl in New Delhi has left everyone aghast. The victim of the horrible crime is struggling for life in Delhi's Safdarjung Hospital. In an emotional letter addressed to her mother, the victim expressed her desire to live.

According to television reports the girl has said, "Maa, main jeena chahti hoon" (Mother, I want to live).

However, one of the accused Vinay Sharma, who has confessed to his crime, demanded that he be hanged.

"I have committed a horrible crime. I had beaten up the boy (victim's friend). I should be hanged," Vinay told the court. The three arrested accused - Mukesh Singh, Pawan Gupta and Vinay Sharma have confessed to their crime on Wednesday, Dec 19.

The three were produced before a court in Saket. The court remanded Pawan and Vinay to four-day police custody while Mukesh was sent to judicial custody for 14 days.

Many have demanded capital punishment for the criminals, who brutally raped, beat and threw the victim out of a moving bus (the crime scene) on the roads to die. According to TV reports, vital organs of the girl are permanently damaged. She is on a ventilator in the hospital's ICU and is getting a regular infusion of morphine to control the pain. Doctors treating her claim that the pain is so excruciating that despite the morphine dose she is conscious.

The next 24 hours are critical, if she pulls through, her chances of survival will improve. India prays.

Doctors treating the girl say that they have never seen such brutality on a sex crime victim. They said she is in extreme pain and has been put on a steady dose of Morphine hoping that it will provide some succour.

Her condition had improved yesterday morning after she was operated upon on Sunday night but her condition deteriorated by yesterday evening. Doctors are battling to keep infections at bay as the injuries are extensive. Her platelet count had dropped, with blood pressure being unstable.
