The shocking incident at the busy two-storey Clackamas Town Centre mall caused a panic and people ran for cover during the firing. Official sources said multiple persons were shot. According to one witness, the attacker sported a hockey mask and wielded an assault rifle.

Oregon Governor John Kitzhaber said he had directed the State Police to take all possible measures to enforce local law. Authorities later closed the entry and exit points of the mall's parking lot.

Police had ruled out the presence of a second shooter.
