Chandigarh, Dec 7: The girl, whose father, a police inspector, was shot dead on Wednesday while he tried to stop eve-teasers from harassing his daughter, alleged that the police did not act on her complaint and that the law-keepers had fled as the criminals killed his father. She said her father, Ravinder Singh, tried to talk to the molesters but they did not listen and instead pulled out a revolver and started shooting at him. She said nobody came forward to their help even as she held her father on her lap and cried out for help.

The victim believed that her father could have been saved if the police had acted on time. Later, four accused, including an expelled Akali Dal leader, Ranjit Rana, were arrested. The police department also took action against the SHO of the area for dereliction of duty. The Punjab police chief found it hard to explain how one of his own man was shot dead by molesters in the city in broad daylight and yet the culprits managed to flee and that the victims were left unattended.

It was alleged that Ravinder Singh's daughter had complained to the police earlier also about Rana harassing her but no action was taken. Then she took up the matter with her father. The aggrieved family was demanding justice.

State Opposition Congress slammed the Akali Dal-BJP government over the incident, saying the law and order situation in the state had completely collapsed. It also demanded the resignation of Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal.

Meanwhile, three of the accused were taken in custody but three more continued to remain at large.
