Amritsar, Dec 6: An Akali Dal activist was arrested on charges of murdering a policeman after the latter tried to stop the accused and two of his colleagues from teasing his daughter. Ravinderpal Singh, an assistant sub-inspector (ASI) of the Punjab Police, was killed in the broad daylight on Wednesday just metres away from Chheharta police station. Three weapons were also recovered. The two other accused were still at large.

The tragedy took place after Singh's daughter spotted the vehicle of the persons who would tease her near Chheharta area and called up her father. Singh soon reached the spot. Following an altercation between him and accused persons, the latter fired at Singh's leg twice and fled. But after about 20 minutes, the accused came back with a rifle and shot the ASI, this time in his chest. They drove away once the ASI collapsed. His daughter was also injured in the firing.

Singh was rushed to a local hospital where he was declared dead. SSP Amritsar (rural) PS Virk said Singh's daughter was teased by the accused while she used to go to her tuition. He said the accused has been identified.

Amritsar Police Commissioner Ram Singh, however, said he did not know if Rana had a connection with the Akali Dal. Sources, however, said it was Rana who had fired at the policeman.

Singh and he was posted at Gharinda police station near Attari border. The police had registered a case under Section 302 of the Arms act against Ranjit Singh Rana, Gurveer Singh and another identified person. Rana is said to be one of the general secretaries in the district body of the Akali Dal.
