Shopping is the latest addition to Kerala's ever-growing list of niche tourism products ranging from backwaters to beaches, from hill stations to shrines, with the Kerala Tourism pitching the forthcoming Grand Kerala Shopping Festival (GKSF) as the newest marketing tool to position the State as an international shopping destination.

The sixth edition of GKSF, already billed as the biggest fiesta of the kind in Asia, will open on Dec 15 with high-voltage campaigns, promotions, tantalizing discounts, incentives from the government, and gifts and gold worth millions of rupees, transforming entire Kerala into 'one single shopping mall' for 48 days.

Kerala Tourism Minister AP Anil Kumar said, "Gifted with natural beauty, Kerala has emerged as a must-see destination for visitors from around the world. But our effort has always been to evolve new niche tourism products. Through GKSF, we are trying to pitch the state as an international shopping destination, broaching a new idea on the marketing front."

"Shopping tourism is going to be the next big thing as we have a strong marketing infrastructure and platform, coupled with the global image. We are planning to give a new Kerala experience to our guests. It is going to be a win-win equation for all, from shoppers to the shop-keepers, from government to the visitors. It coincides with our peak tourism season and Sabarimala pilgrimage," Mr Kumar added.
