EU to maintain distance from Narendra Modi: German envoy

New Delhi, Oct 20: The European Union (EU) although has expressed interest in initiating business ventures in Gujarat, decided to maintain a distance from Chief Minister Narendra Modi at least till the assembly election in December gets over. Last week, the UK changed its earlier stand of imposing a ban on Modi in the wake of the 2002 riots and announced normalisation of ties with Modi.

German Ambassador to India Michael Steiner said on Friday that his country will not change its stand on Modi, particularly ahead of the assembly poll in Gujarat. Steiner said they would not attempt to influence Modi's election campaign. Germany is a prominent nation in the EU.

He said the UK had asked the EU members before announcing its move to lift the ban on Modi but it was told that the EU's stand will not be affected by London's decision.
