West Bengal: Schoolgirl commits suicide following harassment

Kolkata, Aug 13: A 13-year-old schoolgirl is the latest victim of sexual harassment in

. She resorted to

yesterday after her tormenters humiliated her at a reconciliation meeting in Burnpur near Asansol.

Though the girl was rushed to hospital, doctors could not save her and she died today morning.

According to sources, the Class VIII student was harassed by some youngsters last week while she was proceeding to school.

Her family wanted to lodge a police complaint about this but the locals urged them to sort the matter out in talks with the accused.

Hence, the victim and her father attended reconciliation meetings on Aug 10 and 11. However, the youngsters instead of apologising for their crime or showing any repentance heckled both of them.

Unable to bear the fresh humiliation, the girl committed suicide at home on Aug 13. After his daughter succumbed to burn injuries, the grieving father filed an FIR. In it, he has named nine of her tormenters.

Six accused have already been arrested in this connection.
