Guwahati/New Delhi, Aug 8: With the violence in Assam continuing unabated, latest reports suggest that AK-47 rifles were used in the recent attacks that left three people dead. The state government is still grappling to bring the situation under control and has ordered the seizing of arms in the Bodo belt of Assam.

Assam CM Tarun Gogoi has been quoted as saying, "Assam is just like a volcano. You don't know where what happens. Clashes keep occurring in the state whether in Kokrajhar, Karbi Anglong or Dima Hasao. We have taken steps to maintain peace...These kinds of things have being happening since long and sometimes there are such clashes. But we are taking steps to contain such violence."

Gogoi added that external and internal forces are at work to contain the violence.

With the Assam government requesting for a CBI probe to find out the reasons for the clashes, a special CBI team is expected to reach the state tomorrow to probe the violence that has consumed 73 lives so far and left thousands homeless.

An indefinite curfew has been imposed in Kokrajhar, while curfew is in place in Chirang district. The Army has been carrying out flag marches in Kokrajhar, Chirang and Dhubri districts.

The matter on the ethnic violence in Assam is expected to be raised by the Opposition in the monsoon session of Parliament that commences today.
