TMC MLA blames victim for eve-teasing, causes outrage

Kolkata, Jul 29: Actor-turned-MLA from West Bengal Chiranjeet drew flak after allegedly saying that a teenage schoolgirl, who was teased by a youth at the local railway station, had invited trouble because of wearing a 'provocative' dress.

The state Congress leadership slammed the MLA for such a comment and the victim's father, who was allegedly assaulted while trying to shield his daughter, was not impressed either.

The Trinamool Congress MLA, while speaking to reporters at the Barasat police station under his constituency that people should fight to remove the stigma but the women could also be a little more careful in choosing their dresses. Chiranjeet had gone to the police station to make an inquiry about an eve-teasing incident which took place on Saturday night.

A youth was caught allegedly for teasing a girl at Barasat railway station in North 24 Parganas district on Saturday night. Chiranjeet went to inquire about the progress made in the case. He condemned the act of eve-teasing and said the culprit should be punished.

The victim, a resident of Banamalipur area in Barasat, was returning home from tution when the accused, Ramesh Das, started teasing her. He was caught by the local people and beaten up. He was handed over to the police and produced before a local court which reminded him to 14 days of judicial custody. The victim's father was also present at the police station when the MLA went there.

Barasat had caught the headlines last year after a youth was killed while trying to save his sister from eve-teasers. The incident had taken place near top government officials' residence but yet nobody allegedly came to the duo's rescue.
