were numbered and it was important to put in place an alternative and transition at the earliest. White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said the US should work with its partners and the Syrian opposition on the post-Assad situation in the violence-torn state in the Middle East.

He said Assad was clearly losing grip on his country and the momentum against the regime was gaining strength. People who were previously pro-Assad including government officials, foreign ambassadors and military personnel are realising that by backing Assad, they are actually alienating the Syrian people, he said, adding this made it all the more necessary for the Syrian masses and the international community to focus on a probable change.

Carney said the US was persisting with its cooperation with other nations and the Friends of Syria to provide humanitarian assistance to the people of Syria besides giving assistance to the opposition to find itself united against the regime.

He said the Assad regime was continuing to attack the civilian population with heavy artillery, which again proves the depravity of the President. "Syria's future can not include President Assad," the White House official said.

He said the USA was aiming at a transition which will guarantee fundamental rights of all Syrians, including the minorities.
