Mayawati faces setback after statue vandalised

Lucknow, Jul 26: Bahujan Samajwadi party (BSP) supremo and former Uttar Pradesh CM Mayawati had to face a symbolic setback when members of the Uttar Pradesh Navnirman Sena vandalised Mayawati's statue around 2 pm today. The incident is reported to have occurred close to the Ambedkar sthal where the statue was defaced.

The marble statue was vandalised by miscreants believed to be part of the UP Navnirman Sena. The role of the group was confirmed after pamphlets belonging to the group were found in the site. The group had claimed that they would destroy Mayawati's statue on Mar 15, 2012 as per the pamphlet.

The four suspects behind the act are still on the run.

The said statue was unveiled by BSP Minister Nazimuddin Siddiqui.

The DGP of Uttar Pradesh has declared a high alert foreseeing violent protests by BSP supporters in the wake of the statue being vandalised.
