Pinki Pramanik involved in land scam: WB sports minister

Bangalore, Jul 12: Pinki Pramanik was released from judicial custody yesterday but the track athlete immediately found herself at the centre of another controversy with the West Bengal government accusing her of involvement in a land scam.

Madan Mitra, State Sports Minister, told newspersons on Jul 11 that Pinki had sold a three-cottah plot that was handed over by the government on a lease.

"The land was given to Pinki for building her personal residence and not for making profit. If she has sold it for making profit, that is illegal," the minister stressed.

"Anybody who goes to the spot will see a five storey residence coming up there. One can find the name of the present owner from the Kolkata Municipal Corporation records," he added.

The allegation is that Pinki sold the land to Avatar Singh, the husband of Jyotirmoyee Sikdar who won two gold medals at the 1998 Asian Games.

Avatar subsequently sold the plot in the south-eastern part of Kolkata to a promoter and this is the person whom the minister was alluding to.

However, Pinki asserted that she has not sold off the land. "I won it. A house is coming up there," she said. Incidentally, Jyotirmoyee had condemned the "harsh treatment" meted out to Pinki after she was arrested for raping her live-in partner.
