Kerala: IUML's 'green' initiative hits roadblock; row erupts

Kochi, Jul 3: A new controversy seems to be brewing in God's own country,

when the state education department sent a circular to woman teachers to turn up in the colour-coordinated outfit, a typical off-white Kerala Saree and a green blouse. After the matter began to spark off a controversy, the circular was cancelled by late evening on Monday. The cause for the row being that the Education ministry is headed by Indian Union Muslim League (

) member PK Abdu Rabb and the green colour features prominently in the IUML flag.

The IUML is an ally of the ruling Congress-led UDF government. The controversial circular was issued by the Ernakulam Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) District Project Officer KM Aliaar. The same was passed to 15 units in the district ahead of a function on Tuesday. He was later placed under suspension for issuing the disputable order.

The function was organized to handover funds to the various SSA centres that was to be presided by Rabb and three other ministers. As per plans, each SSA centre will be represented by four teachers and in total 60 teachers were instructed to adhere to the dress code. Shahjahan, Kerala School Teachers Association leader condemned the issue and called it unfortunate.

With the incident sparking off rumours, opposition parties are utilising the same and accusing the IUML of hijacking the UDF government. Education Minister Rabb had earlier landed himself in controversy after he sought the renaming of his official residence to 'Grace' that was called 'Ganga'. He wanted the name to be changed before he shifted to his official residence.
