Congress MLA elopes with FB friend, gets thrashed by mob

MLA from Barak Valley, Assam was thrashed by a group of hundred people at a Karimganj hotel.

The 33-year-old Congress MLA was thrashed for allegedly leaving her first husband and 2-year-old daughter and eloping with her Facebook friend, 28-year-old Zakir Hussain.

The incident took place after Rumi went to meet her father.

The angry mob beat up her bodyguards as well. Meanwhile, no police action has been taken in the case.

Rumi had invited the wrath of various groups and was accused of bigamy, theft and illicit relationship.

Rumi was married to Rakesh Singh, an Uttar Pradesh based physician, four years ago and has a 2-year-old daughter with her.

According to police sources, Rakesh Singh had lodged a complaint after he suspected that his wife was abducted.

It later emerged that Rumi married her Facebook friend and went into hiding for several weeks.

After resurfacing back, she admitted that she married Zakir without divorcing her first husband and had converted to Islam. She also alleged that her first husband beat her up and threatened her of dire consequences at various occasions.

Defending herself over her decision to marry, she said in a television interview, "I am not committing any crime. I have no fear and am ready to face every situation."
