Tamil Nadu set to start another legal dam war against Kerala

Chennai, Jun 25: The legal war between Tamil Nadu and Kerala seems to have received another weapon to step up its rivalry to a new angle. After the Mullaperiyar row, now the two states began fighting over Siruvani dam.

KV Ramalingam, the Public Works Minister of Tamil Nadu, on Sunday, Jun 24 clearly stated that Jayalalithaa government will move the Supreme Court if the Kerala government does not withdraw its plan to construct a new dam across the Siruvani river.

The minister also informed that Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa has already written a letter to the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh showing her concern over Kerala's plan to build Siruvani dam.

"Tamil Nadu will not give up its rights with regard to Siruvani and Mullaperiyar," asserted the minister while delivering a pulsating speech during a meeting on Sunday.

Kerala is planning to build a new dam across Siruvani river but Tamil Nadu government claimed that constructing a new dam will affect the interest of its people. Tamil Nadu is currently supplied water from an already existed dam built on Siruvani river (situated in Kerala) and the state fears that a new dam would create hurdles in getting water.

The two states are engaged in an old fight over Mullaperiyar dam. While Kerala wants to re-construct the 116-year-old dam due to its security issues, Tamil Nadu opposed the idea saying that Mullaperiyar dam is safe.
