Fire breaks out in 2nd floor of North Block

broke out today in the North Block, where important union ministries are based, around 2.20 in the afternoon. However, no casualty was reported.

A short circuit in an air-conditioner is believed to have sparked the fire in conference room no 102 which is right next to the offices of Home Minister P Chidambaram, Minister of State for Home Mullapally Ramachandran and Minister of State for Personnel V Narayanaswamy.

It being a Sunday, not many officials were present in the building at the time the fire started. Still police cordoned off the area as a precautionary measure on receiving information.

Meanwhile eight fire tenders were rushed to the spot. They brought the blaze, described as a "minor" one by the Fire Service Department, under control within half an hour.

This incident comes within days of the Mantralaya(Secretariat) in Mumbai being gutted in a spectacular fire.
