The fire was first reported from the cabin of Babanrao Pachpute, Maharashtra state minister and NCP leader, suspected to have broken out due to a short circuit.

According to reports, 11 people have been admitted to 3 various hospital in Mumbai, while several others feared trapped were rescued after choppers from the Indian Navy were pressed into action.

The secretariat was immediately evacuated on the orders of Maharashtra Chief Secretary soon after fire engulfed the Mantralaya building.

The office of Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan was also gutted in the fire. He was, however, not present in the office when the incident took place.
