Hosni Mubarak sentenced to life imprisonment

Hosni Mubarak
Cairo, Jun 2: Former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak has been sentenced to life in prison by a court here. Judge Ahmed Refaat convicted him today on charges of complicity in the killing of protesters during the 2011 uprising that led to his ouster from power.

Mubarak, the first Arab leader to be tried by his own people, was however acquitted on all corruption charges. His sons and six other senior officials were acquitted too.

Egypt's ex-interior minister Habib el-Adly was also sentenced to life for the protester killings. Rifaat said Mubarak and el-Adly did not act to stop the killings during the mass protests that lasted well over two weeks. In the subsequent crackdown, over 850 persons were shot to death in Cairo and other cities across Egypt .

Incidentally, a scuffle broke out in the courtroom immediately after Mubarak was given the life term.
