Aircel-Maxis deal: BJP sharpens ammo against Chidambaram

New Delhi, May 11: The Bharatiya Janata Party (

) intends to grill Union Home Minister

on the Aircel-Maxis deal on the second day after they managed to create considerable ruckus on the same issue on Thursday as well. The Opposition had accused Chidambaram and his family members of being beneficiaries of the Aircel-Maxis deal in 2006. Chidambaram and his son Karti had denied all the allegations.

Broaching the topic, BJP spokesperson Shahnawaz Hussain has been quoted as saying yesterday, "Home Minister P Chidambaram came to the Lok Sabha and gave a personal statement. In his comment, Chidambaram said that he and his family had no share in Aircel. We want to know what is his definition of a family. Is Karti Chidambaram a member of his family or not? Does he have five per cent share in Aircel or not? The whole opposition wants to know this."

Hussain added that his party would raise the issue again and was not content with Chidambaram's response. They have also submitted notice to the Rajya Sabha seeking further clarification from Chidambaram on the Aircel-Maxis deal.

Adding fuel to the already raging fire, Janata party President Subramanian Swamy also fired a fresh salvo accusing Chidambaram. Swamy had earlier alleged that Chidambaram had an active part in the 2G spectrum scam and in the wake of the recent allegations in the Aircel-Maxis deal, Swamy stated that the Home Minister's son Karti was very much involved in the Aircel-Maxis deal and that he received kickbacks for the same.

In Swamy's three-page letter dated Apr 24 to the Prime Minister, Swamy had sought Chidambaram's resignation and added that the CBI should probe both Chidambaram and his son Karti in the Aircel-Maxis deal. The CBI is presently probing the role of former Minister Dayanidhi Maran in the deal.
