SC says plastic posing bigger threat than atom bomb
The Supreme Court was responding to a PIL filed by petitioners through senior advocate Shyam Divan where they cited studies showing veterinary hospital operation data that found 30-50 kg of plastic in cows stomachs across the country. The SC issued a notice to the Centre and state governments stating that unless a total ban on plastic bags was put in place the situation would be uncontrollable. The comments were made by a bench of Justices GS Singhvi and SJ Mukhopadhaya.
The advocate speaking on behalf of the petitioners said that people dispose off food in plastic bags in municipal bins. Attracted to the food, the cows chew up the food along with the plastic bags that ultimately gets deposited in the cow’s stomach that leads to their death.
The PIL was moved by Karuna Society for Animal and Nature. The apex court also suggested that either the use of plastic be completely banned or the manufacturers pick up the used plastic and re-cycle it.
