Mangalore college says no to burqa in class

Girls in Burqa
Mangalore, Apr 28: A college in Mangalore has banned girls from wearing burqa in class and writing examinations, but are allowed to don the outfit outside in its campus.

The ban has been brought into effect by St Aloysius College, an autonomous educational institution.

"The wearing of burqa is banned only while attending classes and writing exams. However, students can wear it in the campus," said Fr Walter Andrade, principal.

"We want to maintain the sanctity of exams and also discipline in classrooms," he said.

"There is a difference between a scarf and burqa," said an official.
