UP jails become luxe after Raja Bhaiya takes over

Uttar Pradesh, Apr 11: A good deal of facilities for the inmates in the jail that includes water coolers, PCOs and clean toilets have been bestowed by Raghuraj Pratap Singh, days after he took over as the Jail Minister of Uttar Pradesh.

The minister said that couples lodged in separate jails/districts will now be lodged in the same jail. The prisoners can also have visitors twice a week. Earlier, they were allowed to have visitors only a month.

Meanwhile, the deadline for the implementation of the reforms in the jails in the first phase has been set for 90 days, while the second phase will begin in Oct.

"We are not promising the moon to jail inmates. We only believe that they should be treated as human beings," said Singh, who was once lodged in prison for several years.

Raja Bhaiya had earlier ordered free surgeries to the inmates suffering from appendicitis, hernia and cataract.

"Cent per cent post surgery recovery has been reported," he said.

He said that the PCOs will see manufactured telephone instruments, which cost from a few thousand to Rs five lakh, which will be available for the inmates and will also be kept inside the office of deputy jailor, to keep an eye on the misuse of the facility.

The prison kitchen's will also replace vanaspati oil for cooking with refined oil.
