Sri Lanka shakes under Indonesian quake;issues tsunami alert

Colombo, Apr 11: Following the Indonesian earthquake measuring 8.7 in the richter scale, as many as 28 countries across the Indian Ocean region have sounded a tsunami alert. Sri Lanka's Meteorological Department has also issued an alert of this nature after the deadly quake in Indonesia's Banda Aceh.

Tremors were felt across parts of Sri Lanka and people were reportedly seen evacuating offices especially near the World Trade Centre in Colombo.

A Meteorological Department official has been quoted as saying, "There is a threat of tsunami due to the earthquake in Indonesia. We ask all people in the coastal area to move to safer areas."

India had also experienced earthquake specially in Bangalore, Chennai, Guwahati in the aftermath of the Indonesian tremor.
