Earthquake in Chennai: Cell phone services affected

Chennai, Apr 11: Cell phones services have been affected in Chennai, Tamil Nadu following a massive earthquake measuring 8.9 on Richter scale hit Sumatra on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, a tsunami warning has been issued to 28 countries including India. [UPDATE: Indonesia reels under aftershocks of 8.2; India shakes too]

According to the tsunami centre's warning, quakes of such a magnitude "have the potential to generate a widespread destructive tsunami that can affect coastlines across the entire Indian Ocean basin". They also said that a wave of 0.2m height is expected.

Tremors were felt across Chennai, Bangalore, Kolkata, Patna, Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi, Cuttack, Bhubaneshwar and several other cities situated on the eastern coast of India. [Read: Chennai gets holiday after tsunami fears on Wednesday]

Meanwhile, no casualties have been reported so far and people have been asked to move away from the coasts.
