Cauvery water: K'taka govt's woes, Jaya refuses new dam

Jayalalithaa
Chennai, Mar 30: The Tamil Nadu government on Saturday, Mar 30 ruled out the construction of a new dam by Karnataka at Mekedhatu across Cauvery river.

In Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly, Chief Minister Jayalalithaa raised the water dispute between Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. "Karnataka cannot build a dam without getting Tamil Nadu's consent. If Karnataka tries to build a dam, Tamil Nadu will not permit it under any circumstances," she said.

"I and my government are committed to securing the state's rightful share in the Cauvery waters," she added.

Slamming Karnataka government, she said the state is using water from Mettur dams for summer irrigation, as per the rules, the state should use 103.24 tmc ft of water but it had used 203 tmc ft for irrigation, "Karnataka is also not giving water to Tamil Nadu for its Kuruvai cultivation (short term) in June and July."
