Lankan war crimes: India votes for US resolution against SL

Geneva, Mar 22: India along with 23 other countries on Thursday, May 22 voted for US moved resolution in UN against Sri Lanka, while 15 countries voted for Sri Lanka over Lankan war crimes. [Read: Why does India vote against Sri Lanka?]

China, Bangladesh, Russia are among the 15 nations which voted for Sri Lanka opposing the US resolution. Sri Lanka faced the vote in the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) meeting in Geneva, asking the nation to take greater responsibility in ensuring the safeguarding of human rights in post conflict areas. India backed the US moved resolution just to pressurise Sri Lanka who violated human rights during the 26-year-old civil war. India earlier had said that it would not cast its vote against Sri Lanka but Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in his recent speech in the Parliament informed about India's decision to vote against Sri Lanka.

Meanwhile, M Karunanidhi led DMK in Tamil Nadu expressed their satisfaction over India's decision. Sri Lanka earlier had called India's move to vote against the former as a 'body blow'.
