AP: Speaker delivers blow; disqualifies 16 from Jagan camp

Hyderabad, Mar 3: In what can be called a blow to rebel Congress leader YS Jaganmohan Reddy, the Andhra Pradesh Assembly speaker disqualified 16 rebel lawmakers belonging to the Congress party who are considered loyal to the Jagan camp on Friday.

Another Jagan loyalist, Shoba Nagi Reddy of Praja Rajyam Party (PRP) also submitted her resignation that was duly accepted by the speaker. A statement on the mass disqualification was made by the speaker, Nandendla Manohar on Friday night.

The Congress had sought the disqualification of the legislators for allegedly violating the party whip and voting in favour of the Opposition, that is the Telugu Desam Party during the no-confidence motion against the government in the assembly last Dec.

The impact of the disqualification is likely to clip the wings of Jaganmohan and his party leading to 17 seats in 294-member Assembly falling vacant. The process of filling in the vacant spots is expected to commence with the Election Commission holding by elections for the same within 6 months.
