New Delhi, Mar 1: The UPA-led congress government is likely to appoint Lt Gen Bikram Singh, the current General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Kolkata-based Eastern Command as the successor of outgoing Army chief General VK Singh.

Meanwhile, the process for appointing Gen VK Singh's successor is in the final stage and would go for the approval of the Cabinet Committee on appointments in next two weeks.

Moreover, intelligence agencies have given a clean chit to Lt Gen Bikram Singh dismissing all allegations levelled against him.

Lt Gen Bikram Singh was commissioned into the Sikh Light Infantry Regiment in 1972 after finishing his course in the National Defence Academy and the Indian Military Academy, much like General VK Singh.

Gen Singh is also a graduate of the Defence Services Staff College, Wellington, the Higher Command Course at MHOW and the US Army War College, Pennsylvania, USA.

Earlier, on Feb 10, the Supreme Court had given the decision that current Army Chief General VK Singh's date of birth in records need not to be changed. He will have to retire from his post on the due date of May 31 this year.
