NRHM scam: Fresh raids underway in 23 places across UP

New Delhi, Feb 25: The NRHM ghost still seems to haunt Uttar Pradesh and its CM Mayawati. After the 5th phase of elections wrapped up, it was raid time yet again in Uttar Pradesh. The CBI carried out fresh raids in as many as 23 places across the state in connection with the scam.

The raids are being carried out in Lucknow, Varanasi, Ghaziabad, Kanpur, Jhansi and Meerut. According to CBI sources, raids are being held in the residences of chief medical officers (CMOs) and deputy CMOs.

The fund mismanagement in the NRHM scam had become a major electoral issue with various political parties including Rahul Gandhi highlighting the issue during campaigning. Four fresh cases were earlier registered by the CBI in the matter against the then Chief Medical Officers who conspired with private drug suppliers to procure sub-standard medicines at exorbitant rates.

According to CBI spokesperson Dharini Mishra, the officials carried out raids across 30 locations in 22 districts of Uttar Pradesh including Lucknow, Varanasi, Meerut, Behraich and Balia at the residences and offices of CMOs, shops of drug suppliers among others.
