Tamil Nadu: HCL providing 2 lakh laptops for Jaya's scheme

Chennai, Feb 22: IT giant Hindustan Computers Limited (HCL) on Tuesday confirmed that it will supply 2 lakh laptops to Tamil Nadu government for state government's free laptop scheme to students in government schools and colleges.

It was reported in national newspaper Mint that the Indian unit of Chinese personal computer (PC) maker Lenovo Group Ltd had emerged as the lowest bidder quoting the price of a laptop at Rs 13,939. It will be supplying 3 lakh laptops to the state government. HCL had made the second lowest bid of Rs 14,452.

Jayalalithaa will provide 6.8 million free laptops to the students of government-aided high schools and colleges. The state government is spending Rs 10,200 crore in total over the scheme. The government has already provided 906,000 laptops at a cost of Rs 912 crore.
