Beijing, Feb 22: Chinese authorities have shut down nearly 8,000 websites in the country, said the government.

The websites were shut following illegal commercial activity hosted by them.

According to Xinhua, the websites were shut down after a nationwide campaign against online black markets.

The illegal activity in the campaign included selling of explosives, weapons, toxic chemicals, ammunition, devices to tap mobile phones and personal information.

The campaign also resulted in getting rid of 53 criminal gangs and led to arrest of 905 suspects, said the ministry.

The ministry also said that 1.2 million online posts were deleted.
