Mullaperiyar dam's safety report delayed again

Kerala, Feb 15: The safety report on the Mullaperiyar dam will be submitted in Apr by the Supreme Court appointed Empowered Committee.

The Committee headed by Justice AS Anand, former chief justice of India a report to the Supreme Court said:

• Most test on the safety of the dam are over.
• An important drilling test is underway and may take to complete, so the report will be submitted in Apr, it said.

The term of the committee will end this month and the committee meeting on Wednesday, Feb 15 will discuss the report.

The Mullaperiyar issue has become a cause of tiff between neighbouring states Kerala and Tamil Nadu. While Kerala fears for the saftey of its people as the dam is located in an area prone to earthquakes and wants to build a new dam, Tamil Nadu has rubbished all allegations and said that Kerala is unnecessarily stirring fear in the hearts of people. The state has also refused Kerala's proposal to build a new dam.
