UP Polls: Mayawati's divide & rule plan goes kaput?

Lucknow, Feb 15: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati's proposal to divide the state into four parts has failed to help her in the state assembly elections.

Mayawati had put up the proposal before the state assembly and sent it to the Centre before beginning her campaign for the ongoing polls. Now she seems to have taken the matter to target the UPA government accusing them of failing to act on the resolution.

Professor AK Pandey, Director of the Centre for Study of Social Exclusion and Inclusive Policy at the Banaras Hindu University was quoted as saying, "The people in general seem indifferent to the issue of creation of smaller states out of UP."

"It largely stems from their realisation that the issue is being raised not for the development of the region but for political motives," said Professor Sudhir Panwar of Lucknow University, who is also the president of the Kisan Jagriti Manch.

"She did not put faces to the movement who could have inspired and rallied supporters. She failed to project local leadership from the Bahujan Samaj Party in these four regions," Panwar added.

The resolution passed by the state assembly on Nov 21, 2011 suggests the splitting of the state into four parts: Purvanchal (eastern UP), Paschim Pradesh (western UP), Avadh Pradesh (central UP) and Bundelkhand.

However, the Ministry of Home Affairs sent back the proposal, eight questions were raised on the proposal to which Mayawati hasn't replied yet.

However, the opposition parties strongly opposed the proposal, claimed that it was an attempt to divert the people from the misrule of the government.
