UP poll underway; acid test for BSP, Congress

Vote
Lucknow, Feb 8: Polling for the first phase began in Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday, Feb 8. It seems to be an acid test for Congress and Bahujan Samajwadi Party led by Mayawati.

Fate of two ministers, 31 MLAs and 15 former ministers will be decided based on Wednesday's polling which has already started in total 55 seats in 10 districts.

Here it can be recalled that during 2007 assembly election, BSP grabbed majority of votes in the districts where polls have started on Wednesday. However, Congress received good response from the same districts during 2009 Lok Sabha elections.

More than 1.70 lakh of the electorate would seal the fate of 862 candidates in the polling to be held in Sitapur, Barabanki, Faizabad, Ambedkar Nagar, Bahraich, Shravasti, Balrampur, Gonda, Siddharth Nagar and Basti. Meanwhile, the polls are being conducted amid tight security arrangements.
