Nagpur Maha Lok Adalat to settle 50,000 cases amicably

Nagpur, Feb 8: The District Legal Services Authority has set a target of 50,000 cases that are to be amicably settled during the third edition of Maha Lok Adalat to be held on March 4.

All types of cases including those relating to land acquisition, criminal (compoundable), civil, matrimonial disputes, motor accident claims, cheque dishonour (sec 138 of Negotiable Instrument Acts), motor vehicles, will come up for amicable settlement, district judge Pushpa Ganediwala told reporters, here yesterday.

All types of courts, including the district, taluka, family, industrial, labour, co-operation courts and tribunals will operate that day to deal with the cases, she said. About 75 panels each, consisting of a judicial officer, a lawyer, para-legal volunteer and social workers will handle the cases.

Series of meetings by Principal District Judge S D Mohod have been organised with judges, lawyers, representatives of financial companies, insurances companies and police.

During the first Maha Lok Adalat held in February last year, 20,068 cases had been settled out of 60,324 cases. During the second such exercise in September last year, 8,098 cases, out of 27,906 had been settled. In Nagpur district, there are 1,47,788 criminal and 42,898 civil cases, (total 1,90,686) pending as in January this year, Ganediwala said adding that about 3.5 lakh cases had been settles across the state last year.
