Criminals contesting polls from jail in Maya's land

Lucknow, Feb 8: Over 30 criminals and mafia dons are contesting the assembly elections from jails in Uttar Pradesh.

This time, two people with criminal records are contesting as mainstream party candidates. The rest are nominees of fringe outfits.

The contestants with criminal background are - Prem Prakash Singh aka Munna Bajrangi from Madiyahon (Jaunpur) on an Apna Dal ticket, who is currently lodged in Tihar Jail.

Another gangster, Brijesh Singh of Pragatisheel Samaj Party, an inmate of Ahmedabad jail, is an accused in more than 40 criminal cases.

Other candidates with criminal record are Atiq Ahmed, Jitendra Singh Babloo and Purshottam Naresh Dwivedi. Atiq is contesting from Basti jail whereas Babloo will fight from Bikapur.

Babloo was arrested for arson attack on the house of UPCC president Rita Bahuguna Joshi.

Amar Mani Tripathi, who was charged in Madhumita murder case, got a ticket for his son Aman Mani Tripathi from Nautanwa and his uncle Shyam Narayan Tiwari would contest from Farenda.
