UP Polls Shocker: 109 candidates face criminal charges

Uttar Pradesh, Jan 28: With the upcoming UP assembly elections on its way and 871 candidates having filed their nomination for the first phase, its is revealed that atleast 109 of them face criminal charges against them, according to a detailed study by a NGO.

What comes as a shock is that the out of these 109 candidates, 46 have been accused in serious crimes like rape, murder, rioting and extortion.

"Our party does not give ticket to any person who has a criminal background." said Akhilesh Yadav, Samajwadi Party leader in reply when he was asked about DP Yadav, former SP leader.

"This is an increase of 10 per cent from last time. The figure is worrying because this year all political parties made a lot of noise about clean candidates but didn't deliver on that promise," said Anil Briwal, Association For Democratic reform.

Of those against whom criminal charges have been levelled include 12 candidates of BJP, 11 candidates of Samajwadi party who face serious criminal charges, 11 candidates of BSP and 5 congress candidates.

SP's Mitrasen Yadav from Bikapur faces 11 attempt to murder charges and others like dacoity.

Mayaw's BSP which bulldozed ministers facing corruption charges from the party includes Indira Pratap, BSP candidate from Gossaignganj, who faces charges of 5 of attempt to murder and 5 cases related to murder.

BJP's Mahasi candidate Surveshwar faces charges of rioting and murder.
