Pune accident: Brave 21 year old student captures driver

Pune, Jan 26: With the residents of Pune still recovering from the shock that saw an

on the way shocking people across the country, the one person that avoided the incident from causing further casualties is 21 year old Keralite college student Sharif Ibrahim Kutty. The local braveheart is slowly gaining a superhero status in Pune.

Ibrahim is understood to have stopped the mentally unstable driver Santosh Maruti Mane from running over more people and overpowered him to stop the bus. Failing to do so might have resulted in Mane killing and injuring a lot more people. Ibrahim's quick thinking, prompt action and presence of mind is bringing him a lot of laurels. Ibrahim Kutty lives in Vishrantwadi along with his parents and sister and is a final-year student of computer application. He was on his way to college in his motorcycle when he encountered the rampage by the state transport bus. Ibrahim Kutty recalling the incident said, "I stopped to help the injured. But when the bus, instead of halting, continued to speed on Napier Road, I got on my motorcycle and went after it in the hope that I could make the driver stop. I was afraid, but determined to catch him."

He added, "The bus driver hit two cars between Savarkar chowk and Samadhan bhel shop, but he slowed down on seeing barricades ahead. At this point, I halted my vehicle and jumped into the bus which was still moving. I pounced on the driver and dragged him out from the cabin."

Ibrahim Kutty who came to the Swar Gate to record his statement, said, "The bus driver's foot was on the accelerator, but I pulled him with all my strength. I was shocked when he showed no signs of remorse. Soon a mob entered the bus and began beating him till he was rescued by a police team."

Dilip Burte, a Solapur-based psychiatrist has revealed that he was treating the accused MSRTC driver Santosh Mane for "psychosis" around one-and-a-half to two years back. Speaking to a popular newspaper, the doctor said, "My preliminary observations were that he was showing symptoms of schizophrenia and mania."
