Bangalore: Watch out for ATM thieves with 'matchsticks'

Bangalore, Jan 19: A 22-year-old youth have been arrested by Bangalore police for allegedly slipping money from customers' accounts from the State Bank of Mysore ATM at Kempegowda Marg, Bangalore.

According to media reports, police arrested Manish Kumar Singh based on a cctv footage where it shows the accused first inserting a matchstick beneath the Enter button, which stops transaction because of the stuck Enter button.

When customers swipe their ATM cards and enter their PIN, they find no transaction being done and leave the place. The accused soon enters the ATM, takes out the matchstick, presses Enter and withdraws cash from the customer's account. In between, he is seen showing his ATM card at the camera to show that he was a bonafide customer.

The accused withdrew Rs 15,000 and again Rs 10,000 from the accounts of two different customers before being caught in the third attempt.

Meanwhile, the bank has asked customers not get out from the ATMs until their transactions were complete. Adding to it, it said that if a transaction does not take place, they should wait for the ATM to show that the transaction was cancelled.
