New Delhi, Jan 16: After the Kushwaha row, the BJP in a last-ditch effort to showcase a clean image is counting on Uttarakhand chief minister BC Khanduri to do just that. Banking on Khanduri's clean image, the BJP wants to completely utilize the fact to the hilt and has now coined a new slogan that will be its running theme for its publicity campaign.

In an effort to highlight the good work by the party in Uttarakhand, the BJP coined the slogan “Khanduri hai zaroori” (Khanduri is necessary). The various developmental works carried out by the party in various sectors is also part of the campaign.

78 year old Khanduri is quickly emerging as the poster boy for the BJP who kicked off his political achievements as NDA’s surface transport minister . He was behind the launch of the quadrilateral project to widen national highways across the country. He was also successful in passage of the citizens’ charter, lokayukta and a transparent transfer policy for government employees.

Hailed as landmark decisions during his stint as Uttarakhand CM, even Team Anna lauded him saying that his bill was closest to the Jan Lokpal Bill.

With the Congress spreading a malicious campaign citing that the BJP would dump Khanduri once the elections are over, BJP's Rajnath Singh who is also in-charge of election campaign refuted all rumours and said that Khnaduri would continue in his post if back in power.

In an announcement in Dehradun, Singh said, “Khanduri will remain chief minister if we form the government." The endorsement of Khanduri, hailing from a Brahmin background was seen as a setback for the Rajput lobby. The party was hoping that Bhagat Singh Koshiyari will hold the reins of power in the state.

Nirmala Sitharaman, who is handling the BJP's media strategy said, "We are on a positive campaign and want to engage the people in a meaningful way on what's been done so far and what will be done in the next five years with a renewed mandate in this hill state with an international border.”
