Unfazed by fatwa, MP govt to hold mass Surya Namaskar show

Bhopal, Jan 12: The Madhya Pradesh government will go ahead with the state wide Surya Namaskar, hoping that it will get into the Guinness Book of World Records.

According to the MP government, the exercise will move Kazakhstan out of the league as it holds the Guinness record for holding the largest aerobics demonstration.

At least 5 lakh students, including 1 crore people are expected to take part in the mass Surya Namaskar programme.

Earlier, Muslim leaders had appealed that it was against Islam, as it was equal to idol worshipping, issuing a fatwa against it.

They had also appealed parents not to send their wards to school.

Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan had on Tuesday said that it was not compulsory that the students take part in the mass Surya Namaskar.

"Match Fixing between BJP/RSS and Jamiat Islami over Surya Namaskar issue in MP. Surya Namaskar is a Yogic Excercise unconnected with Religon," read Congress leader Digvijay Singh's tweet after the issue drew criticism.
