Zardari, Gilani meet following SC holding

Islamabad, Jan 10: President Asif Ali Zardari held a late-night meeting with Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani on , hours after Pakistan's Supreme Court warned that action could be taken against both of them for failing to reopen high-profile corruption cases.

Zardari held a one-on-one meeting with Gilani at the presidency shortly after he returned to Islamabad from Karachi late in the night, presidential spokesman Farhatullah Babar said.

Following the meeting with the Prime Minister, the President would meet with the heads of parties that are partners in the Pakistan People's Party-led government and also hold a meeting of the PPP's core committee or top leadership, Babar said.

Earlier in the day, the apex court warned that action could be taken against both the President and Prime Minister for failing to act on a court order to reopen corruption cases that were closed under a graft amnesty that was issued by former military ruler Pervez Musharraf in 2007.

The amnesty was struck down by the apex court in December 2009. Since then, the court has been pressuring the government to reopen corruption cases against Zardari and over 8,000 other beneficiaries of the amnesty.
